How long does SEO take?
The honest answer: usually several months, and nobody can seriously guarantee it. What matters more is what affects the timeline and how to tell early that it is working.
Start a projectWhy it takes time
Three things happen in sequence. Google first has to crawl the change. Then the page has to be indexed and reassessed. Finally, enough signals have to build up for it to beat existing pages. The first step often takes days, the last takes much longer. Google itself notes that changes take different amounts of time depending on their nature and the site.
What speeds it up
- Technical faults: if an important page was set to
noindexby accident, fixing it can work quickly. - Existing visibility: a page at position 8 to 15 is closer than one that does not appear. Work on those first.
- Local, specific searches: less competition usually means less effort.
- An established domain: new pages on a known site tend to be found faster.
What slows it down
- A new domain: hardly any links and few trust signals yet.
- Tough competition: you rarely beat big portals head on. Take the route through more specific searches instead.
- YMYL topics: health and finance have especially high trust requirements.
- A thin base: if no suitable page exists, nothing can rank.
Early signs that it is working
Do not wait for revenue. In Search Console you often see this sequence:
- Important pages are indexed.
- Impressions rise: Google shows you for more searches.
- Average position improves for the terms that matter.
- Clicks rise.
- Enquiries and sales follow.
If impressions rise but clicks do not, the title and description may be the cause. If clicks arrive but enquiries do not, the page is the problem, not the ranking.
What to expect from a provider
A good provider gives you priorities and milestones, not a fixed position by a fixed date. Be careful with “first place in 30 days”: Google assigns rankings. Google’s own guide warns about providers who promise this, and bought links can do damage.
What does SEO cost?
That depends on the same factors: the state of the site, the competition, and the number of services and languages. A one-off part for technology and structure often makes sense, followed by content at a pace you can sustain. SEO abandoned after three months usually costs more than none at all. To see where you stand, go through the SEO checklist first or ask for an analysis.
When SEO is the wrong answer
If you need enquiries next week, ads are the honest choice. SEO is then the investment alongside them: it builds something that keeps running when you stop the ad budget.
